You can spot me struggling to say this color in early 2025 when I spotted it trending among shades of green. Although it was new to me when I saw it in keyword research, it’s a well-known, classic tone in art. The name is short for Phthalocyanine — a copper-based, synthetic greenish-blue pigment. Invented in the 1930s, as chemists turned experiments with synthetic dyes into paints. It quickly became popular with artists, and it is often visually associated with that era.

According to one article, “When it was discovered, it was thought to be the most significant advance in artist pigments since the discovery of synthetic Ultramarine Blue in 1826.”

It’s a color of modernity — as in Jackson Pollock’s Alchemy (1947).

Phthalo is a type of pigment and there are different types of them, including a vibrant, deep green.

What Everyone’s Saying

As creatives rejected Cloud Dancer as Pantone’s choice for the 2026 Color of the year, this striking shade of green kept coming up in posts. Topically, the color has been ticking up throughout the past 12 months and seems to be where a lot of design is heading.

On a psychological level Phthalo Green can mean creativity, vitality and emotional healing. The blue undertone adds a sense of serenity making it a colour that inspires relaxation and introspection. In design it often means sophistication, stability and modernity especially when used in minimalistic projects. from Phthalo Green Color: Everything You Need to Know, Printiverse

Although it’s not strictly part of the color palette, the tone reminds me of the color grading in the film Amélie.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see these, and similar colorways popping up throughout the next year.
